Posted by Steve on Sun, 20 Dec 2009 12:36:23 UTC We've been meaning to try the official Formula One iPhone/iPod Touch game since it was announced last week, and since it has now been released onto the App Store for download, we thought we'd give you our hands-on look.First of all, the app looks slick, with the graphics being on par with the best racing games on the platform, and similar in feel to the PSP and Wii games this is following from (both from Codemasters). It follows a rather strange, but intuitive control-system, with both the accelerator and brake on the right hand side, with a KERS (gives you speed boost, at the press of a) button on the left where other games keep the brake. The rather disappointing feature of the game is that there doesn't seem to be an actual "Race" mode. There is only the option to undertake two forms of time trial, with one being a fastest lap affair, and one being an average lap, with the either the fastest or average being saved to a local or online leaderboard. The controls are adjustable, so if the default turning of the iPhone/iPod is too much or too little sensitive, this can be adjusted, with the cars providing a nice level of grip which should mean that there will be no 90 degree turns of the device whilst playing. It features all 17 tracks, all 20 drivers and all the teams from this season's F1 campaign, and this should be enough to attract fans of the sport to the application. Whether or not the casual gamer will experience much from the lack of anything immediately competitive may be the main drawback in this game which costs £3.99, and so therefore the audience may be limited. 6/10comments powered by Disqus |
