Flip UltraHD

We recently had time to play with the new Flip UltraHD pocket videocamera and as the market for these has exploded over the past year or so, it would be interesting to see what a higher-end model could do.

Size-wise, the unit is a fair bit larger than the non-HD Flip Mino that we also have in the office, and although it is chunkier most mobile phones, it doesn't seem to add any weight to a jean or jacket pocket (although it would definitely look out of place in skinny jeans).
The device feels nice in the hand, not too big, and not too small, with button location being spot on (for myself anyway).

It packs a nice 2" display that looks crisp and sharp, with good focus and a decent range of colours. It could still be on the small side for people with eyesight difficulties (particularly OAPs who will be attracted by the ease-of-use of the device), but for the majority, it did seem to be sufficient.

You're also treated to an HDMI output as well as the ubiquitous flip-out USB connector, so you can hook it up to an HD TV to enjoy your videos. You will need to provide your own cable though, as it would have added an extra expense to the camera for users who are only interested in PC integration.

Once recorded and transferred to your PC, videos can be played by any .mp4 compatible player (we used Quicktime, although the effects should be the same on any). They do look nice in high-light situations, and in low-light we'd consider them acceptable.
For this price you're not going to get stella image quality, but we'd say that it performs better than its £160 price tag, of course, it'd be best to check out some test video to see whether it's up to your standards.

The file sizes do come out quite large, so if you're planning on sharing them on the web, it'd be wise to make sure you have some compression software before uploading (it'll make life easier to export it to a size just slightly bigger than the web player's native size, rather than uploading the raw file).

In conclusion, this is a very good offering from Flip. If you're on the lookout for a pocket videocamera in the £120-£200 range, it offers an easy to use interface, good quality images, and an attractive online pricetag of £160.
We'll be posting our test clips soon, so as long as you're happy with the outcome, we'd imagine you'd be happy with the Flip UltraHD.
