Google changes the satnav game with free offering

Fake ChromeOS stories aside, Google actually has something pretty major for us today; a free satnav application for Android 2.0 (Eclair) phones.

The term "game changer" is thrown around a lot when talking about new technologies, but with companies like Garmin and TomTom gearing up for subscription apps on the iPhone (and we assume were looking at Android too), Google's product is really aiming to take both of them out.

Google is perfectly placed to create this kind of product; massive library of free-to-use maps, images of streets all over the country, it's own mobile platform where all the phones have GPS as well as the technological know-how to make it all mesh.

Looking at the stock prices for Garmin and TomTom, it's clear to see that investors are really worried that this is going to drive the prices those companies charge through the floor.
