Michael Jackson's Online Popularity

Since the unfortunate news of the King Of Pop's tragic death broke out from TMZ last week, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of grief onto the web's social networks.

A quick glimpse on Facebook and Twitter on Thursday night/Friday morning just showed a small sliver of the shock at his death and tribute to one of the 20th century's best artists.

This was enough to bring down several of the world's biggest sites (including Twitter), and has catapulted MJ back into the world's thoughts.

We reached out to the massively popular (and a RandomlyAccessed recommened application) Spotify to see how many of his songs had been played around his death.
In the first 12 hours after his death, the service played 1.6 million Michael Jackson songs, and from his death to now, there has been a 30x increase in the number of songs played.

That is quite a staggering number and testament to Michael Jackson's online popularity.
