Posted by News on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 13:50:14 BST15 and 17 inch MacBook Pros get i5 and i7 refresh Apple has just dished the dirt on the new MacBook Pros, with them stuffing the 15" and 17" models with the new Core i5 and i7 chips from Intel, along with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics and HDD space bumps.Quite strangely though, Apple has decided to bump the base HDD size on the 13", add in the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M GPU but keep it running along on an (albeit faster) Core 2 Duo. What's even more worrying, is that it now starts at £999, rather than the smidge over £900 it was about 2 hours ago. If you're in the market for a 15" model (which unfortunately, we're not - holding off for an updated 13"...), then you're pretty well catered for, with the standard spec range starting at £1,500 for a Core i5 with 4GB RAM, going up to £1,800 for an i7 packer (although other options can be added, raising the price higher still). The 17-incher sticks with an i5 base, with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD, with an optional i7 chip adding £160 onto the standard £1,900. So, you're pretty well set at the higher end, but the price bump for the 13" model seems odd and just smacks of Apple aligning prices ahead of the international iPad launch. [Apple MacBook Pro] |
Posted by News on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:36:59 BSTApple Store down, new MacBook Pros incoming? The Apple Store is currently down. It's a Tuesday, and rumours have been pegging today as the launch of new MacBook Pro models with updated Intel Core i3, i5 (and even perhaps) i7 processors.Whether we get these or not is all down to fate now, but the stars are aligning, and we should know around 1.30/2pm UK time (which is 8.30/9am ET, New York time). Keep your eyes peeled. Update: Of course, it could also be UK iPad pricing/preorder information, with it being less than two weeks before its rumoured launch internationally. [Apple Store] |
Posted by Steve on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 08:35:27 BSTTwitter announces part of monetisation strategy; Promoted Tweets Part of Twitter's enigma has been that it is such a large ecosystem, with little to no idea of how it'll make money, which has often surprised consumers and frustrated those tasked with looking at the company in-depth. So, how will a company worth around $1bn with a (rumoured) user-based of 100m people earn its keep?Today, the company will be announcing the first stage of what they hope will be an interesting part of the monetisation strategy; Promoted Tweets. These work in a similar way to the Sponsored Results in the search engines that we're all used to, featuring at the top of Twitter's search pages scored on relevance. The main aspect that the company is trumpeting though is that these Promoted Tweets are just that, tweets. There's no external ads, just organic parts of the Twitter ecosystem allowing companies to get their 140 characters in front of a whole new group of users. A whole bunch of top tier companies have signed up, including: Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks, and Virgin America. [Twitter Blog] |
Posted by Steve on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 18:45:42 BSTMicrosoft launches new Kin Sidekick-inspired devices Following on from Microsoft's purchase of Sidekick (a QWERTY-kickflip range of devices in the US) creator; Danger, a few years back, the world has been waiting to see the outcome of the two companies working together.Well, now they've just loosed the details on two new handsets built entirely for keeping in contact with your social graph. The two new "Kin" devices have slide-out QWERTY's, as well as a few other hot specs, all running on a new social operating system (not Windows Phone 7). From their blurb, it looks like you'll also get multitouch gestures ("use fingers to pan, scan and zoom"), which infers a capacitive screen. The Kin One (vertical QWERTY slider), packs a 5MP camera with flash and 4GB storage, where as the Kin Two (sideways QWERTY slider) fits in an 8MP cam which can record HD video as well 8GB storage. Both come with a media player powered by Zune (a hint that there's no real desire to see these out of the States at present). [Kin] |
Posted by News on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 08:50:46 BSTPalm up for sale Bloomberg has it that Palm has put itself up on the auction block with a view to selling to a more stable handset manufacturer after disappointing sales of their current crop of webOS devices.Their single network strategy in the US is widely believed to be one of the problems for the original Pre and Pixi phones, as Sprint isn't the favoured carrier, with a Verizon launch coming too late in the day to regain mindshare among smartphone buyers. It's rumoured that HTC or Lenovo might swoop in and pick the company up, with Dell having already assessed a deal and backing away. From the very little hands-on time (seemingly anyone has had) in the UK with the O2 version of the Pre, it's a really nice device with a solid look and feel, so it'd be a shame to see it disappear completely. Posted by Steve on Sat, 10 Apr 2010 10:02:44 BSTTwitter acquires Tweetie for 1st party apps In news that shouldn't have come as much of a surprise as it has, Twitter has bought popular iPhone and Mac Twitter client Tweetie to help thrust themselves onto the most popular platforms with an official presence.Tweetie for the iPhone will be rebranded as "Twitter for iPhone" (and be made free, as opposed to a few pounds), with the company hoping to launch "Twitter for iPad" soon with the help of the acquisition. Whether or not the Mac desktop variant changes name is yet to be seen. This will have come straight out of the left-field for a lot of developers, but, it was only a matter of time before the company decided to start claiming back some of the marketshare they generously gave away with their 3rd Party API. Their reasoning? Users keep on looking for a "Twitter" iPhone app, can't find one and get frustrated and stop looking, so they're hoping an official app will help curb this. They do tease that "developers, services, and publishers will be able to leverage the Twitter iPhone and iPad applications to create additional innovative tools and integrations for users", so it might not be all over for the 3rd party on those platforms.
