Posted by News on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 20:36:51 BSTTwitter launches new homepage Twitter has just launched a new homepage for when you turn up to the site not logged in, highlighting top tweets and users from around the site who add value to the experience. The previous version puts more emphasis on getting users to sign-up, but with the microblogging platform hitting the mainstream in recent months, the company can shift focus to providing a more general outlook on the happenings of the service. They've also rejigged their tagline from "Share and discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world" to "Discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world". It feels slightly more corporate and "grown up"; something to be expected of a service in its 4th year with closing in on 100m users and a valuation of $1bn. [Twitter Blog] |
Posted by Steve on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 12:40:34 BSTLHC records 7TeV particle collision The Large Hadron Collider at CERN located under parts of Switzerland and France, and the largest of its kind in the world, has just recorded the most energy intensive collision; 3.5TeV on each beam, which means a collision at 7TeV.The system is a 27km ring underground which fires particles together at high speeds, smashing them and viewing the debris looking for particles and interactions between them at the sub-atom level. This is a landmark day for science and particle physics in particular, allowing scientists around the world to delve into the data, looking for new particles and interactions that can never have been seen at lower energies. The experiments surrounding the LHC will be celebrating, but also beginning the work of recording and evaluating the data being received from the collisions. [CERN Webcast] |
Posted by News on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 17:34:44 UTC16GB USB mass storage coming to Xbox 360 The Xbox 360 will be getting an interesting update on April 6th which will allow you to store game files and profile data onto any USB mass storage device, not just proprietary Microsoft units. You'll be able to plug in a maximum of two USB products, each allowing 16GB of maximum storage (no matter the size of the device; if you're packing 1TB then you'll still be capped at 16GB), which gives you a theoretical maximum of 32GB across the two. Quite how practical carrying two extra thumb drives will be without one going walkies is anyone's guess, but it's nice to have access to some extra storage. 16GB per drive doesn't sound massive compared to new Flash/HDDs on the market today (protip, Major Nelson points out that Flash memory will give you a much better experience than a spinning disk like an HDD), but in the console realm, being able to take your files with you on any storage medium is huge. You'll need to format any device, but the company is partnering with Sandisk to launch a branded USB drive, but any drive over 1GB will work fine come April 6th. [Major Nelson] (via Engadget) |
Posted by Steve on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 13:58:09 UTCThe Times to start charging for web content from June The Times and Sunday Times are to start charging for their online content from June of this year after the two papers receive web overhauls from parent company; News International in May.The FT has shown that users do pay for premium content, and the move pegs the price at £1 per day or £2 per week for access to both thetimes.co.uk and thesundaytimes.co.uk ($2/€1.5 a day or $4/€3 for a week internationally). With devices like the Amazon Kindle and the incoming iPad showing that users are willing to pay for access to online content once again, it's definitely the best time to be introducing a pay wall (which we've stated several times). Times+ looks to be the hub for payments, allowing you to sign-up for exclusive access to their new site when it launches (ready to take your credit card number). This is the step I've been waiting for, I've been calling the death of free, old-media content online for several years and it seems that the brand with some of the best web content is believing lock-stock in that philosophy. For £2 a week, are you going to subscribe? [The Times Online] |
Posted by Steve on Tue, 23 Mar 2010 08:48:20 UTCNintendo bringing 3D DS successor "3DS" to E3 2010 Nintendo has dropped something of a bomb this morning by announcing that they will unveil their latest piece of portable gaming hardware in the form of a glasses-free 3D successor to the DS, the; 3DS (temporary name, but it does fit). What do we know so far? Well, it'll obviously pack 3D games, but it will also be backwards compatible with DS games, and the chances are good-to-excellent of it having a camera as it's also backwards compatible with the DSi's individual roster as well. The company expects the console to launch by this time next year (end of March 2011), which we don't know whether is an international date, or a Japan-only date like so many consoles from the country. All of the details will be revealed at the annual gaming get-together of E3 from June 11th this year. Although a slight grain of salt may be taken due to the timing nature of this announcement, with a certain April 1st next week. [Nintento Japan (PDF) (via Engadget) |

The 17" model is available in black and white and is specced with a Blu-Ray player, with the 14" running a conventional DVD+-RW setup and available in Black, White, Pink, Blue or Green colour options and both come packing an instant on OS to hook into web browsing in a matter of seconds. Both will be in retail at the start of April for an (as yet) undisclosed price. |
